I got this watch to time feedings for my new daughter and the time between feedings along with being readable at night. The watch had all of the features I was looking for and the tough solar is a nice touch. This is a very large watch and orange stands out so if you have small wrists or don’t like bright colors, I would steer clear of this one, otherwise it is a winner.

Casio G Shock GX56-4D, May 12, 2011

This watch is AWESOME!! I’ve read as much reviews and opinions as I can before making the desicion to purchase. I must say I had a difficult time finding any store selling it until a friend recommended Amazon.

First impression, “Awesome”!! An anniversary/birthday gift from my wife.

The obvious: color and size.

The color is not as bright as in pictures. The orange is actually leaning more towards the reddish spectrum so it’s not bright like a kid’s toy. So if you are concerned that the orange might be too bright in pictures, it is not so in person.

The size. The reviews I’ve read says, “Huge”, “double the size of the original G”, “you need a massive arm/wrist to wear this..”

I say, not true. While it is large it isn’t twice the size of the original G. Today’s fashion calls for “large” anyway but this watch is not overly large as some have stated.

As for the features and functions they are typical G Shock stuff proven and effective. One feature I really dig is the Solar Power. A full charge will provide power in total darkness for 11 months says the manual.

This is my second G Shock in 18 years. My wife’s niece who is in middle school asked for a G Shock (The Rescue in red)for her birthday and so we got her one. Middle schoolers are wearing Men’s G Shocks so you can imagine how big it looks on their slim wrists. Shopping for her G is when I realized how G Shock designs have changed so much that I gained interest again.

However, I am more attracted to the “exclusive” models like this purchase in orange. I am a 99% satisfied customer. What is the 1% of unsatisfaction? The “negative display” is a wee bit on the darker side. It takes me a couple milliseconds longer to make out the time and date.

8/2011 Update:

I’m used to checking the time now. The negative display is a positive feature now that I’m used to it. First impression I get from others is that it’s really big but then they get used to it and say, “It’s a good size.” I’m still happy.

“Stainless Steel Back Japan..” Not sure if that means Made in Japan.

A “MUST HAVE” FOR CERTAIN PERSONS, July 1, 2011

PERSONS WHO WILL LOVE THIS WATCH NO MATTER WHAT OTHERS THINK: (1) Casio collectors, even casual collectors such as myself (2) Persons who want to wear large watches (3) Persons who want to make an orange fashion statement. (4) Persons who want the black face, disregarding readability (5) Persons who want the comprehensive features of all Casios

PERSONS WHO WILL CRITICIZE THIS WATCH: (1) Those who find the black dial, reverse display, difficult to read (2) Having disregarded the specs, those who find the watch too large (3) Persons who find the Mudman-type buttons difficult to push (4) Those who complain about almost everything

PUZZLING PRICING: Chalk this up to Casio’s penchant for multiple model identifiers. My watch is marked “GX-56″ and “Japan” rather than from Thailand or other origins. It is, however, not marked with the “JF” suffix which denotes Japanese manufacture. Casio’s Web site lists the GX56-1 (black) and the GX56-4 (orange) at a 0 retail price point. I purchased this watch on 06/27/2011, from a domestic supplier, shipping included, for 3. Today (07/01/11) at 8am it was listed on Amazon for 5 from the same supplier. Six hours later it was listed on Amazon for 5 from a different supplier. My best guess — and others may have greater insight on pricing per specific model and country of origin — is that suppliers are attempting to get every penny they can because of the orange color, much as they do from red models and yellow models. This orange watch is readily available from dependable Asian suppliers for 0 including shipping. The watch is a wonderful value for those who purchase at less than the suggested retail price. The watch is a bonanza for suppliers who can sell the watch at greater than the retail price to those who can’t live without orange.

MY WATCH . . . is wonderful. Although large, at 88g (3.1oz.) it’s very light and comfortable. I’ll live with the extra effort to push the buttons because I appreciate the way they ensure the integrity of the case. The dial is decidedly more difficult to read than Casios with light-colored dials. If this is to be your only watch, you may want to purchase something easier to read. However, I’m 66 years old and if I can read it, you probably can too.
